Abstract: Supervisors worldwide face considerable challenges in helping their PhD studentswrite papersfor submission to SCI journals, and the challenges are greater where English is a foreign language. Based on 25 years of research and practice in this field, including 15 years visiting China, this seminar will summarise current knowledge of what is needed for effective support and potential steps that can be taken at the level of the individual student, the research group, the college, and the university. It will introduce a proven method for developing students’ publication skills in English, and discuss the course based on it that is currently being taught in the College of Agronomy. It will also present a step-wise process for mentoring students in article writing that can be used by all supervisors.
